Athough it's still been 85-95 degrees in Denver, it has started to cool off at night and feel like fall in the mornings. So, it's the perfect time to go hiking. We've been trying to hike every weekend, and Max loves it as much as Colin and I do.
Once our stuff (finally!) arrived from Australia, we had the backpack carrier to take Max. Our first hike was Bear of the Lair at the end of August. Max lasted about 30 minutes in the backpack and then discovered how much fun it was to get out of the backpack and throw rocks into the river.
Max happily collecting rocks
And even more happily throwing them into the river
Daddy found the biggest rocks, which of course, are the best!
We had to drag Max away, kicking and screaming, until we got to the part where he got to walk across the big rocks by himself :)
In September, we went hiking at Deer Creek Canyon twice. The first time, Max forgot his obsession with rocks (there was no river on this hike) and became addicted to collecting berries.
He brought back a pile of green berries for the car ride home
The second time, we introduced Max to the beautiful changing leaves in fall, and he spent over an hour in the backpack collecting red, orange, yellow and green leaves along the way. Unfortunately, we didn't take a camera with us to get any photos, but we got a few of Max in the car on the way home playing with mommy's hat...
Other than hiking, Max has been enjoying fall by demanding to go for a tricycle or wagon ride every day (sometimes twice). On these bike rides, Max is the navigator and takes the same route each time - we start out walking 2 1/2 blocks toward the park, where there is a house with Max's favorite thing - BERRIES! He won't leave until he has red, orange and white berries and takes as many as his little hands can hold. We then continue to our friends Jean and Andy's old house (they've moved back to Australia) where Max can see another of his favorite things - the garden gnome :) He let's us know where to go by saying "Jean's house" and "gnome" over and over until we get there. On the way to Jean's house, there is another house with lawn ornamnents (a little boy and 2 deer) which Max LOVES and asks for by saying "boy" and "animals" (he hasn't quite learned what deer are yet). Finally, on the way home, we pass a coffee shop which is growing it's own pumpkins. Max knows there are 4 pumpkins and has to touch each one several times before we can head home.
Max loves doing this so much that sometimes we wake up in the morning to Max calling out "Jean's house!" or "orange, red, white." Now that it's fall, it's sometimes still even dark outside, but he doesn't care - he just keeps saying these things over and over until we go :) Yes - he has us wrapped around that little tiny finger of his. And yes, we're going to regret it once winter arrives :)
